    Conflict in the Workplace

    Handling Difficult Conversations

Silhouettes of people with colorful speech bubbles An illustration of dialogue and thoughts taking place among silhouettes of people in various positions. The speech bubbles are yellow, pink, light blue, red and green. The sole thought bubble is purple. The bubbles are of varying sizes and shapes. For example, the yellow one resembles a flag on a short flagpole, while the blue one resembles a round pin. Some of the silhouetted people are touching their hands to their chins, and one is gesturing upward with his pointer finger. Some of the silhouettes have their heads tilted slightly forward. workplace conflict stock illustrations

Conflict in the workplace is a common challenge that arises when people with different perspectives, goals, or communication styles interact.

Difficult conversations — whether you’re coaching an employee, or you have an upcoming unenthusiastic performance review, to handle, difficult conversations are an inevitable part of management.

How should you prepare for this kind of discussion? How do you find the right words in the moment? And, how can you manage the exchange so that it goes as smoothly as possible?

Raquel will share some insights and strategies to manage workplace conflict and will share her expertise on having difficult conversations.

Raquel Garcia is the Executive Director of CityServe TulareKings, a private non-profit organization that trains, equips, and mobilizes the local church to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ in its community through compassion projects.  She holds a Master’s degree in Leadership & Organizational studies with an emphasis on Peacemaking & Conflict Resolution and an undergraduate degree in Management & Organizational Development, from Fresno Pacific University.  Raquel is a leadership coach, consultant, and facilitator of leadership development. Her specialty is staff development, strategic planning, and project management. She is a professor with the School of Business at Fresno Pacific and also teaches for Vanguard university in the School of Professional Studies.  She enjoys teaching adult learners in courses such as Leadership & Change, Ethics & Values, Organizational Behavior, and Business Policy & Strategy.  Raquel previously served as the Leadership Visalia, Program Facilitator for 7 years, guiding participants through a 10-month academy that promoted professional growth, leadership development, and a community-based project. Her compassion work is centered around helping victims of domestic violence.  She served on the board at Family Services of Tulare County for 8 years and has remained dedicated to supporting the advocacy and work being done to help keep local families safe.  Raquel is a doctoral candidate at Northcentral University, in her third year, where she is pursuing her Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership. In her spare time, Raquel enjoys gardening, cooking, and entertaining.  She is married to Andy, her husband of 25 years; they have 2 children Sophia (15) & Andy Jr. (14).
